SRV recorded the song before his death in 1990, and it was released in 1991 on his posthumous album, “The Sky is Crying.”
This was written by another neighborhood kid, Doyle Bramhall, who was born and raised in West Dallas. Vaughan and Brahmhall were high school buddies who played in bands together in Dallas and Austin. And the song “Life by the Drop” is about his friendship with Vaughan. While Brahmhall, a drummer and singer, never achieved the same success as Vaughan, he did record an album with the Vaughan Brothers, “Family Style.” And he had two successful solo albums.
