I remember the milk man bringing milk into the house and putting it in the frig, and no it wasn't a horse-drawn wagon.
I don't think it is the same Helms.
Helms was born in Helmsburg, Indiana, the son of Hildreth Esther (Abram) and Fred Robert Helms. In 1956, Helms made his way to Nashville, Tennessee and then spent most of his later years living just outside Martinsville, Indiana.
The Helms Bakery was/is in LA and was owned by Paul Helms Jr. and Paul Helms Sr. But maybe related?
I like to think they could have been related. That side of town always smelled SO TASTY, and their little brown truck was always a welcome sight. He tended to show up after the milkman. And yeah, they did have those newfangled motorised conveyances so popular with the humans at that time.
I bet Nashville was still nice back then; wish I could have experienced that, but I did not escape from the clutches of the west coast [albeit it briefly] until the early 90s.
