Well, when it's easier for a company to produce a false certificate, and say "trust me bro", than it is to maintain a public centralized database for all certified parts. Seriously, all crediting agencies are terrible at presenting a concise, searchable database.

Ironically, its these same agencies that will charge thousands of dollars for anyone to access their edicts, or test products for listing. They swim in money.

This has been a known problem for decades. And yes, planes have gone down because of it.
