Carpet traps dust and other crap that otherwise floats around in your air and gets into your lungs, eyes, food, etc.
That said, I prefer to use rugs on hardwood. Easy to easy, and to clean under or switch out, and you can take them out and beat them like a Democrat.

Carpet is the biggest filter in your house.
It may not be as easy to clean, but without it all of the stuff it traps isn't getting trapped. It's in the air, it's.... well it's not trapped in the filter.
