But you have to leave the kid on top to change channels.

Don't be a cheapass and get the one with the RF remote.

You mean the one that has a 20' wire which ran from the TV to the remote.

No, the one with the RF remote. Or the Ultrasonic remote for later ones.

Are you kidding?

It's only a couple hundred more in 1968 dollars. You want the latest technology, don't you?

Had one of these with a television sitting on top of it growing up.

That's one of the "you might be a redneck" jokes.

Another: "If your old living room furniture is your new patio furniture you might be a redneck."

Grandma's generation didn't have to worry as much about "looters". They make up a much larger percentage of the population these days.

I don't miss the console TVs, but I do miss the console stereo. One of my "eventually" projects is that I want to custom build my own console stereo using modern components. I might or might not stick a turntable into it, but I mainly want to have a modern FM receiver (can't beat the radio on a chips that are being made now for selectivity and sensitivity, if you put a good front end on it) and some kind of internet radio client, like Volumino.

I want to have some physical knobs (including a huge, smooth volume knob) but having a touch screen like the Volumino interface would be nice. I would have to clean up my code hacking skills to get a good FM interface added to Volumino, though.

(If someone knows about a better client that might handle that, let me know. I'm not opposed to buying a relatively inexpensive network FM receiver if I can bury it in the console AND it has a client that embeds/integrates with some kind of DLNA client, because that it 95% of what I want.)

I'd be content with a simple rack system, but sounds like a neat project.

I like woodworking and fine furniture, and I'm past the age where I want blinkenlights all over the place.
