Well, the steps are how the magic happens. I'd suggest you open yourself to the possibility of 2. Imagine that it's possible. Spiritual progress, not perfection.

I have seen other people work the steps and end up really better for it.
I believe they can work miracles.
I just personally can't see any higher power as being good.
