Food preservation is not food safety. The primary reason bacon is cooked is to kill parasites within the pork. Period.

My point being, my comment was down voted because people believe (likely because of your overall good comment) curing addresses parasitic contamination. As such, I wanted to stress that curing does not necessarily make it safe for human consumption. This is why it's cooked.
