It started off with just being connected to the intranet was considered the cloud, and many companies like Seagate had personal clouds where you maintained your own storage. Then right as google and a few others started offering storage, whoops, sorry , Seagate decided to disable the internet function. All part of the big push to have all of your data stored where someone else has administrative access to it.

For me it started off building frame relay networks - "cloud" WAN.

I remember using the PROMIS system, and their "email" interface was so bad, I decided, even though I was designing the first 10BASE2 phy, that this interconnected internet thing was never going to work. I liked my ARCNET for doing reliable status updates and saw a path in machine on /off/i'm broken messaging, but nothing further...
