"The cloud" is just someone else's computer, as I repeatedly remind my less nerdy friends. You're trusting that someone implicitly. Do so at your own risk.
I still remember when "cloud" was brand new buzz. All the sales guys were excited. One with whom I was friendly quietly stated he didn't want to sound dumb, but what is the cloud? I told him it's simply someone else's computer. I could see the excitement drain from his face.
I respected him more that day because he was smart enough to want to understand something more than marketing buzzwords.

Yep. I can remember trying to explain WAN services to a client. They were able to understand point-to-point links but asked me what the 'sales guy' was talking about when they said the data would be going through the cloud.
It started off with just being connected to the intranet was considered the cloud, and many companies like Seagate had personal clouds where you maintained your own storage. Then right as google and a few others started offering storage, whoops, sorry , Seagate decided to disable the internet function. All part of the big push to have all of your data stored where someone else has administrative access to it.
