Ethiopian runner Derara Hurisa was disqualified from the 2021 Vienna City Marathon (winning time 2:09:22) for wearing Adidas Adizero Prime X shoes with a 5cm sole thickness, violating the 4cm maximum limit set by World Athletics. The infraction, discovered shortly after the race, resulted in Kenyan runner Leonard Langat being declared the winner. Key Details of the Incident: The Violation: The shoes worn, the Adidas Adizero Prime X, exceeded the allowed stack height by 10mm (1cm). The Rule: According to World Athletics Technical Rule 5.13, road-racing shoes must not have a sole thicker than 40mm. The Disqualification: Hurisa was disqualified less than 45 minutes after crossing the finish line. The Switch: Hurisa registered a different, legal pair of shoes for the race but wore the thicker pair instead, which he had used in training.
This was the first high-profile disqualification of its kind based on the new shoe regulations for road races.
