I served on a local school board for several years in the very district where I had attended grade school, middle school, and high school. The defining moment was when my own niece - a grade-school teacher - and I were discussing her use of "git" and "fer" and "sich," "he done this," and "he done that." I said "Holly, you can't talk like that; the students look to you for the correct way to speak."
Her response? "Oh, Uncle Jim, it's no problem. The school board told us not to correct the kids' speech because THAT'S HOW THEIR PARENTS TALK." She really said that.

Kids should be reading in kindergarten, preschool in some cases.

My children were read to from infancy. When they were old enough to focus their eyes, they got Dr Seuss stuff, "Where the Wild Things Are", and other books with color and a handful of words. I ran my finger under each word as I read dramatically to them. Every single night.
By the time they were three they were reading the books to me. As they grew, we went through the classics, like Charlotte's Web, Huck and Tom, White Fang, Where the Red Fern Grows.
I continued reading to them into their teens. They eventually got horror fiction, like Stephen King and HPL.
If you have children, read to them. Teach them the joy of the written word. You'll all benefit as individuals and as a family.

Excellent! This is really great news. Education should NOT be for everyone blindly. It should be available for those who want to go but no requirements of any kind. Parents who want educated kids can make that happen. We need to go back to a multi-tier system where some people who work hard get the rewards and those who do not get fucked.

Exactly. We need to adopt the Japanese system. You pound education into the kids, kick the shit out of them when they get out of line and when they hit high school you test the shit out of them to determine if you they go to University or trade school.
