People own these dogs because of their reputation, then act surprised when they live up to that reputation...
Pit bulls are beautiful dogs with the sweetest disposition in the world, if they are raised with love and not mistreated. When abused, they can be dangerous because they are more powerful and more relentless that other dog breeds. When they attack, they can't be frightened away and they ignore pain. Their bite is powerful (although not the most powerful bite of all dog breeds). But they refuse to let go.
Obviously, they are not a breed that everyone should own. Only those who know how to properly raise dogs and train them should get pit bulls for pets. But they make great pets. You'll never get more love from any dog.
They were bred and developed to fight captured wild bulls, to the death, in a pit. What part of that do you not understand?
