Supposedly the judge deliberately fucked them over too by not giving the jury proper instructions about the charges, and instead just reading the statute, which is completely wrong.

Exactly, these lawyers ask the jury to vote based on "law" but in fact jury's have the ability to vote on their conscience, REGARDLESS of whatever laws they broke. Its a part of the balance of powers being a juror and its a shame that jury nullification advice is obscurely avoided.
