My suspicion is that whoever picked the judge for the case--and such things are never done randomly for high profile trials like this--royally fucked up. This judge has a reputation for being tough on criminals. This is why he was picked. They thought the judge would side with the state and help convict Rittenhouse. What they didn't realize was that the judge has a strong sense of justice and not a pro-state bias as they expected. You can see the difference the judge can make by comparing the one in Chauvin's trial and Rittenhouse's trial.
I can guarantee that this isn't the first trial together with the judge & prosecutor. DA's usually overstep their boundaries when it comes to prosecution, they go for the maximum amount of the criminal could legally receive, and try to tack on a bunch of bullshit side charges that are thrown out (or called out in this case) by a judge who really knows the law in and out.
What a great judge. WE NEED MORE OF THIS, FOLKS.
