You have a huge artery in your armpit, which begins to branch off into your arm. If this artery is just nicked, you could bleed to death in a few minutes without help.
It's written that, historically, the armpit was a frequent target for stabbing or cutting. This was not just because it was often one of the more exposed, vulnerable areas on armored targets- it was also because it was seen that striking that artery will put a man out of a fight most of the time. At the worst, you've taken their arm out of the fight and put them on a timer to kill you. At best, they fall down in agony, shock sets in, they bleed out.
It's possible that a gunshot to the shoulder could've caused bone/bullet fragments to sever this artery. It's also possible that the bullet "bounced and tumbled" around in her shoulder, depending on what kind of bullet it was.
All that being said, if there was EMS on the scene, even if it took 15 minutes for them to reach her, she should've made it to the hospital. While serious, an artery wound to the armpit is easy to treat quickly and stop the bleeding so the patient can be taken to get stitched together by a doctor. The quick clot powder alone would've really slowed the bleeding.
This is a very bizarre incident. It stinks. Especially given the recent strikes, and that the only dead person is one of the union leaders! Almost like somebody wanted her dealt with. I still want to know why there is live ammunition on a set like this, though. Most of the bullet impact effects (when actors are being shot at or w/e) are done with small charges and nowadays CGI. Y'know, like they would do for a lot of war movies, they bury a small explosive in the ground and detonate it to simulate an artillery shell or cannonball or what have you. This is all highly questionable.
