Banks borrow your money to lend it to others who have to pay interest on it, while giving you a fraction of that return, or in some cases make you pay (negative intrest). I'm considering, when things deteriorate, to withdraw my money from the bank to 'put it under my mattress'.
Money in the bank is even less useful than money in your hand, but during communism theyre both essentially useless... you need food, not valueless paper
