Crusades was ethnic Europeans repelling and reversing ethnic Arab invasion. Christianity vs Islam was an immaterial facade that had very little to do with the actual cause of the war.
It's just easier to get the layman to fight a war of ideals, in this case it was religious but sometimes it's political like NatSoc vs Communism, instead of a material war over land and resources.
