New Zealand has answered "yes!"

Knives and scissors have been removed from supermarket shelves in New Zealand after a recent stabbing attack. Supermarket chain Countdown said on Saturday, a partial "knife control" would be in effect for several weeks to prevent stabbing attacks going forward.

This decision came after a Sri Lankan national injured six people at a Countdown location in Auckland last Friday. Authorities said the attacker was inspired by the Islamic State to carry out the attack. (snip)

Several other supermarket chains also removed knives from their shelves over the weekend. It remains unclear when this self-imposed "knife control" would end.

What's next? Banning rope because it can be used to strangle people?

They can make this work. When the Japanese conquered Okinawa they also introduced a strict knife control policy. Each village was authorized to have one communal knife, for the purpose of food preparation, chained to a stone block in the center of the village. They can do the same. Just add a second chain with a pair of scissors. Think how safe everyone would be. If it saves just one life...

Control was the point. It's easier when you have a huge homogenous peasant population that is conditioned from birth to obey their social superiors without question. And that samurai had the right to instantly kill any peasant the annoyed them on the spot and just walk away.

That is how you got Karate (emptu hand). Supposedly Okinawans needed to defend themselves and created Karate that included the use of unusual weapons. Maybe we will get a martial art from NZ based on umbrellas?

What people should remember about all of those weapons is that they were based on the everyday tools that people were allowed to have, and they weren't meant for single combat. Your talking about a very tight-knit society of rural people who are conditioned to think and act collectively. So a drunk samurai starts outraging the local females and swinging his sword a little too wildly, he's not going to be facing one guy with a set of nunchucks. He'll have the whole village down on his ass with rice flails, pitchforks and hoes.
