When you rig and steal an election; paranoia is bound to set in. everyone not in on it becomes the enemy. everyone not complicit knows what you did and they are coming for you. never underestimate paranoia. it doesn't always get better over time. they may forget but you know what you did. same reasons cheaters get caught, they do things that get them caught so they don't have to bury the secret anymore and the fear they will be found out. hard core liars are fairly good at soothing their conscience by blaming everyone and justifying their actions with hatred.
