That would have been nice to see. Unfortunately, everything I've seen doesn't look like they joined in and they weren't acting like they joined in at all. Instead, they acted as agents of control to mitigate escalation.
- They cohencidentally all 'joined in' at the same time which signifies acting upon orders directed to them from superiors and not actions by individuals.
- They cohencidentally spaced out their numbers to ensure that they kept a line at the front so that they could lead and control the direction and speed of the movement.
- They regularly kept check on those around and behind them to ensure control of the herd to prevent those behind them from passing around them and going off in an undesirable direction.
It's disappointing overall. However, the fact that as it appears they needed to resort to tactics of feigning participation in order to maintain their control, that is very telling of how much they feared what it could turn into as that would mean they knew they could not handle the people if they had met physical resistance and then started to fight back for their freedom and nation in a meaningful way.

Somebody in the Twitter comments said its called kettleing. They're basically directing the crowd on their preferred route most likely towards choke points so the crowd will be easier to handle in the event of a riot. Not sure how true that is but it makes sense.
