Preindustrial era outside of cities families went to town once a month or so, they may talk to the neighbors a few miles away once in awhile and get together for certain celebrations but in colder climates they’d usually hunker down for winter and stayed pretty close to home. Working the farm/fields was a means to survive the upcoming winter.

Family was their source of engagement, not school, not work or hanging out with friends. Now you can video call anyone you want, watch TV etc and be engaged all day if that’s how you wish to spend your life.

If this report is true then it falls on the parents.

Both parents and extended family might be at work all day/night, unlike the pre-industrial era.

Come on, people were in lockdown and there were curfews, businesses were closed around 8 here. Parents were rearranging schedules and employers were giving paid time off for half days for home schooling etc.
