It's not that hard to get the cops to let you on your way in that situation, Just have one person refueling who isn't openly armed and there's a 99% chance they will just chill there and watch your back while you reenter the freeway. You have to be on a fairly remote freeway to stop on the shoulder and not expect LEO to be joining you shortly. These guys are retards but I'm not ruling out that they were part of a larger convoy.

Well there is a whole gaggle of them on their webpage. Funny thing is it's only about a 300 mile trip which is well within the range of most vehicles.
