Truth. If you feel compelled to say anything just say it was "self defense" and then shut your mouth till you talk to your lawyer. A person should never apologize for defending themselves, their loved ones, or their rights.

This dude fucked up by apologizing, you should never say a word to the police except through your lawyer, they'll do whatever they can to coerce you into a incriminating yourself.

Unlike the USA, in Canada apologizing isn't considered a admission of guilt because it's a natural inclination for people to do it even when they're aren't at fault.
