Driven out of? No, the USA PAID Mexico for Alto California, which was only inhabited by missionaries and indigenous natives and didn't even have enough of those to qualify for any federal votes as a Mexican state.

And prior to the USA paying it slavery was legal in Alto California but when it was transferred to USA ownership it entered the union as a free state. There have never ever been any slaves in the state of California. In fact, less than 15 years later slavery was abolished federally in all USA states.
