I find it difficult to believe someone could have designed it to be vulnerable to such an attack in the first place. It all stinks of BS.

I don't. Utilities have piss poor safety. It's quite likely your house is harder to break in than your local water treatment plant (unless you are in a major city and even then).

Nah. Utilities are known for their lackluster IT. It always happens because some dumbass clicks an email that they shouldn’t. The hackers literally trick one stupid person and that Ransome ware ends up spreading through the network.

Even the shitty retail business I managed had separate networks for critical machines used in operations; and the machine I sent reports to the owners and accessed Internet/Email accounts. I was even able to replicate such networks in my home using multiple routers and hard-wiring important machines to their own routers. I do have IT experience and studied on my own, but no certificates or degrees to assist in landing jobs in the field.
