They should just let people quit the military, then people wouldn't have to do shit like this to try and escape.

You world think someone would be able to quit in a manner not involving first hijacking a bus full of kids, but what do I know.

Being in basic training is like being in minimum security prison. You are not allowed to leave, your options are faking an injury, faking being suicidal, or trying to run, which makes you a criminal and cops can arrest you and bring you back. You used to be able to fake being gay but Obama got rid of that option.

Without doxxing myself too much: I've been through it. I know. Could just repeatedly fail your run for bad knees. Nothing involving a school bus full of children there to speak of.

You can't just refuse to train either. They'll literally starve you into submission.

Back when I was in boot, there was a pair of kids who really got homesick about 3 weeks in. They missed their girlfriends. So they came up with a plan- one night, make sure every recruit on firewatch saw them kiss.

I remember being awoken to a pissed off senior DI having his wall pounded on by firewatch recruit to inform him that Recruits so-and-so were... kissing, sir.

Never saw those guys again. I don't think this would have worked for them like... 3 or 4 years later, probably would've just gotten them quarterdecked or severely disciplined... idk how the fuck a sexual situation would be handled, because that shit never came up.. we were more focused on, y'know, becoming warriors.

they do. if you can't march, follow orders or shoot marksman, they will help you out. but a recruit/trainee can just say, "hey, this shit ain't working for me." they will counsel and cajole, but all one has to do is just keep asking for a discharge.

When I said "just quit" I didn't mean have to persistently refuse for weeks while getting chewed out and threatened on a constant basis. I mean I went to basic like 20 years ago so maybe it is a lot easier now.

They do. The processing isn't quite as long as this guy's prison sentence will be, but they will definitely slow walk your discharge.

The point is that you're wrong.

Source: been there, watched it happen to others.

The point is that you can't just quit, you have to deal with weeks of harassment and bullshit first. If they would just let people quit when they want, people wouldn't do stupid shit like this. The reason he did this was he was trying to escape, he wouldn't have tried to escape if he could have just left when he wanted to.

You can't walk out the front gate. But you will be immediately pulled from boot camp stuff. Aka the stuff he was trying to get away from.

You can quit. Just not like a job that you can give the boss the finger and walk out the front door. But that kind of job also doesn't require the type of contracts you sign before starting in the military.
