The point is that you can't just quit, you have to deal with weeks of harassment and bullshit first. If they would just let people quit when they want, people wouldn't do stupid shit like this. The reason he did this was he was trying to escape, he wouldn't have tried to escape if he could have just left when he wanted to.
You can't walk out the front gate. But you will be immediately pulled from boot camp stuff. Aka the stuff he was trying to get away from.
You can quit. Just not like a job that you can give the boss the finger and walk out the front door. But that kind of job also doesn't require the type of contracts you sign before starting in the military.
