Even a Webelo knows that you pack enough gear to be able to survive for a few days before getting lost in the woods.
A webelos would know to take a compass with them, get a map, and pre plan the trip before leaving, which was standard when I was a scout. You also notify parents and local authorities with a call back, and if it's missed, S&R is based off the hiking guide you gave them. The chances of scouts getting lost was zero, because of the amount of pre planning and research that went into doing stuff, instead of doing it the nigger way. Probably why scouts was shit canned, got forbid we help men out there to actually read a fucking map and not waste monumental time doing police S&R over bullshit

Also most cell phones have a compass. If he knows he has to go north or south based off the initial direction, he could have easily found his way. Knowing that the sun goes East to West, he could have used that with no compass. Or the direction of the moss, which is north, or the lean of the trees based off general wind direction. A combination of where the sun is with moss, means he now knows where the general direction of North and East are, giving him where West and South are. This is BASIC non compass based ways of finding your positions without a map or compass. Plus everyone knows you always mark your path just in case, with a carving, a mark, or something, just in case
Not for a 2hr hike. You barely even need to pack water.
