Math is great to get you in the ballpark, but no bridge is built exactly to spec, it is undoubtedly overengineered, and redundancies are put in place. If you estimate 30 tons worth of load, you make that bridge capable of supporting 75 tons, or you're asking for trouble.

Take your automobile, the manufacturers understand you're a hamfisted moron who has no concept for weight transfer or the friction coefficient of your tires, let alone monitor your tire pressure. They overengineer safety into the car to compensate for your incompetence behind the wheel.
