Newspapers and magazines have been dumbed down to a 8th grade reading comprehension level so they don't confuse immigrants and people with a 15 second attention span. Journalists have to think like a 13 year old.

I remember being told in middle school in the '90s that newspapers were written at a 4th grade level of literacy and the majority of adults are at about an 8th grade level.
