It really has nothing to do with the current trial. Basically the witness is a dealer. If he testifies and tells the truth he'll be admitting to crimes he's not been prosecuted for. His testimony in would be a confession. They'd be able to arrest him based on his confession and send him to prison for a long time. 5th amendment exists for this situation.
