Just thinking out loud here:

If Russia were to wipe LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Philly and any other liberal city I forgot off the map, would the rest of the country even fight Russia or would they thank Russia for doing them a solid?

You realize of course that if Russia's war planners have decided that war with the US is inevitable, they may have then also decided that since they are weaker militarily, the best chance for an equitable outcome would be a Russian nuclear first strike on America.

High altitude Neutron thermonuclear explosions leave infrastructure fully intact but will irradiate anyone within the impact radius. This is not a ww2 fission bomb that flattens a city like Hiroshima, but a series of very high altitude neutron detonations that would wipe the USA city population centers of life in 10 minutes without so much as breaking a window.
