They're being paid to give a more informed opinion than the average joe and defend it (and their reputation)
Of course not.
That is what expert witnesses are paid to do, yes. I wasn't trying to suggest that the original coroner was the average joe in that description. The prosecution are just selecting witnesses most likely to support their case.
Well, of course they are going to interview "expert witnesses" and select the one most persuadable to spin the autopsy report as best they can. If I was a corrupt lawyer, that's what I'd do. Anything to make it rain.
I had a Great Uncle who was always in court, suing people or being sued for being a scumbag backstabber. I was talking to his daughter about his life long obsession with weaseling his way into business with unsuspecting people and all the time he spent in court instead of with his business. I just didn't understand the man. His daughter clued me in. One time when her dad and her mom were having an argument he lost his temper and started shouting, "I'll do anything for money, I'll do anything for money, I'll do anything for money! Do you understand?!!!"
This is how many of these people think. They don't care about reputation, being seen as slimy or a shyster, because they'll do anything for money and power.

Well, it is somewhat corrupt if they're knowingly perpetuating falsehood, but at the same time trials are an adversarial process. It's the duty of the prosecution to make the strongest case they can for conviction, including selecting the strongest witnesses to support that case, while leaving aside the weaker ones. The jury are the ones who are supposed to be neutral and objective.

What a guy. I wonder what caused him to be that way.
