Russia started out as Kievan Rus after prince Vladimir was baptized in the Dneiper river in 900 something AD. The language difference is fairly insignificant, to me it's a stretch calling Russian and ukrainian as separate language, they're dialects at best.
There is a small minority of people pushing for "national purity" they're the ones that are funded by NGOs who are ran by our greatest ally.
