Ah, OK. That makes sense. I thought maybe they were doing this because funeral homes might've been at risk of going out of business because so many families were saying they couldn't afford the bill after services were rendered.

When my mom passed away a few years ago, we couldn't afford a funeral either, but then I found out states have programs that will pay for low cost crematory services. We went this route, then had a memorial service for her that only cost us $300. Total? About $1100 for the cremation and service. Of course this wouldn't work if their loved one didn't want to be cremated, but I thought this was the preferred method for those who have died from "highly contagious" diseases.
