According to an article in the International Business Times from late 2014 it was reported that the Vatican had around $20 million worth of gold reserves kept with the U.S. Federal Reserve. Beyond its gold holdings it also held $764 million in equity in various accounts and managed $64 billion in assets globally.

Sell one of those priceless works of art you keep in those thousands of storerooms. The Vatican is the largest real estate landlord in the World. This lie is even more outlandish than it is utterly preposterous.

First thing the new pope did was sell off ancient golden heirlooms for charity.

They're also a sovereign country which might make it hard to get a judgement enforced against them. I think the dioceses operate as separate corps or something, so after the "local" goes bankrupt, it's hard to get anything.
