A good shot explodes the heart. Your brain also nearly instantly stops working from immediate loss of blood flow. Like being choked out but faster.

Many worse ways to go exist.

There is debate if the brain continues to function for several minutes or not. This goes back in time to guillotine use and documents indicating some heads attempted to speak, including eye contact and eyes following, after execution.

Maybe worse than I portray.

The dramatic loss of blood pressure leads to shock, so even if the brain seems alert and responsive, it has no awareness of pain or often even what’s happening.

As a child a friend of mine fell through a deck and one of the boards completely went through his leg. He was talking to us like normal and even trying to walk around while we were waiting for an ambulance, and after the fact he had no memory of the fall or of the time spent waiting.

So, even if the brain remains active after the guillotine or firing squad, it’s highly unlikely that the person is actually aware even if they’re responding to stimuli.

Saw a video of man in India who had been sliced in half at the waist by a train after he fell on the tracks. He lifted up on his arms and said he had a headache but was amazingly calm.
