But, pet theft is just property theft. A misdemeanor unless it is an expensive race horse, or breading stud, or specialty trained service animal, etc. (And, unless you are dumb enough to shoot the dog walker.)

Not always. There's a lot of variables, such as where you were hit, the kind/caliber of bullet, the firearm used, your general fitness, how long it takes for you to get medical attention, etc.. This is anecdotal, but I know a man who took a 7.62 round to the belly from an SKS. Hit him right next to the belly button. He had these tube things affixed to him on the outside and inside for about 3 years, and once he had all of that removed, he made a full recovery. Last weekend, we did some light boxing sparring. I was hesitant to hit him in the belly, but he said "go ahead, it's cool". And he was right, I lit him up right where he was shot and he reacted like anyone else. Maybe I just suck at punching?

However, 4 bullets in the chest? You're probably right here, this guy is probably considered "maimed". Who knows what organs, nerves, blood vessels, etc. that were struck and severely damaged, requiring surgical repair? He may have lungs, liver, kidney, or digestive problems for the rest of his life. Not to mention the psychological trauma. I imagine he was probably shot with a pistol- 4 bullets from most rifles in the chest, you're dead before the ambulance arrives, and most crimes like this are committed with pistols.
