Washington is literally the most important American in history. That’s not an opinion, this country would not exist if he had not survived the revolution. The portion of the constitution dedicated to structuring the presidency was left intentionally vague because the framers intended for Washington to flesh it out. He held the country together through the greatest adversity you could imagine. His achievements alone make him number one. He impressed the French so much they bankrupted themselves to help us win the war. He was the only commander in chief throughout the whole revolution. He presided over the constitutional convention. He denied power every time it was offered and would only accept when he was told no other man could fill the position and even then he didn’t intend to stay in power long. He bankrupted himself funding the revolution. He couldn’t even afford to attend his own inauguration and had to take out a loan to finance the trip. He is the only unanimously elected president, TWICE. He is the only independent president. He built this country from a collection of self interested individuals and inspired them to something greater. Washington is bar none the most important figure in American history and if you can’t look at a statue of him then you’re not American.

Washington owned slaves, and, in order to preserve national unity, he supported measures passed by Congress to protect slavery. He endeavored to assimilate Native Americans into Anglo-American culture, but combated indigenous resistance during instances of violent conflict.
