Right? I had to reread that portion, because I was thinking "who writes like this? Why is he dressing up a 'stabbing/cutting' as "the sharp point of the knife being used on the woman, causing a laceration'?!"
I would've conveyed the same info far more clearly in fewer words. I get the impression that the writer is not an English-first individual.

They probably have a minimum word count per article to get paid. Similar to a high school book report that all of a sudden doesn't have any contractions in the entire thing because you have to hit that 1000 word minimum.
