Uh how can they tell that a connection between any two IP addresses was "hacking"
If they can then they were also man in the middle on that same connection, meaning for all we know it was the reporter doing the hacking

Exactly. I do network security and I can tell you that the second I turn up a new up connected to the internet I get hammered by scanners. If they get any response, the vulnerability scans start coming. China, Netherlands, Russia are usually the first I see.
Big diff between getting hacked and scanned. Much more info needed to determine whats going on.
