Essentially, users on that subreddit community discovered that many investors were “shorting” GameStop by betting on it to fail, so late last week, WallStreetBets convinced enough people to buy stock in the seemingly-doomed retail store to increase its valuation against all odds. Basically, just piss money up against a wall and who cares, assume you've already lost it, but enough people are doing it so all the drops in the ocean became a well-aimed and directed storm.
So WSB bet against market trends (trend a failing, fickle poor stock would collapse like they almost all do), thus collapsing hedge funds like Citron Research and Melvin Capital (*who were betting on it to fail; buy stock when its cheap, ride it as it climbs, get out when it bottoms out to make money), however WSB got investors like those from Chewy.com to invest heavily into with millions. All shit broke lose, it broke what was a sure thing for the professional traders and most are probably on suicide watch, lol.
So now we stand at a point where brokers are asking legislators to put restrictions on Gamestop from trading as a few poor slobs are single-handedly destroying the wealth of multi-millionaires, who are trading paper currencies and our superannuation like our lives and our futures are some joke to them.
