With funding from Chinese backer, 162 Ethiopian immigrants arrive in Israel

Dozens of new immigrants from Ethiopia stepped into the brisk early morning winter air at Ben Gurion airport on Friday to start their new lives as Israeli citizens.

Clutching Israeli flags, some passengers knelt to kiss the ground after they descended the stairs from the plane.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane carrying 162 passengers was the sixth flight in Operation Tzur Yisrael, which aims to bring 2,000 Ethiopians from the Falash Mura community waiting in camps to Israel in the coming months.

The flight was funded by Keren Hayesod – United Israel Appeal, which serves as the official fundraising body for Israel.

It was financially supported by Peter Wang, a Christian Chinese entrepreneur.

Peter Wang should release the following statement (paraphrasing Barbara Lerner Spectre):

"At this point in time, Israel has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we Chinese are going to be part of the throes of that transformation, which must take place. Israel is not going to be the monolithic society they once were in the last century. Chinese are going to be at the centre of that. It’s a huge transformation for Israel to make. Israel is now going into a multicultural mode, and Chinese will be resented because of our leading role. But without that leading role and without that transformation, Israel will not survive."
