Agreed. I see people paying a yearly fee for cloud storage and the like, and ask them why they don't just buy an external hard drive with software that automagically backs shit up for them. The answer is always crickets.

Not everyone has a massive basement where they can store a library full of storage.

While it's certainly not cheap, you can buy 18tb enterprise rated hard drives in a 3.5" format. Most motherboards usually sport at least 6 slots to attach them. That's a lot of storage in one computer case.

Not everyone (or hardly anyone) needs that much storage. What a terrible argument.

Think of your carbon footprint, right Mr. Gates?

All I have is a small NAS device with 2 bays of 6 terabytes each. Works great for me.

One reason is ransomware.

What? Ransomware is a reason to pay for cloud storage? Do you even lift brah? Who the fuck is dumb enough to get ransomware in 2021? Oh right! people dumb enough to pay for "secure" cloud storage that is constantly scanned and you do not own the second it leaves your network. Read the terms of the storage contract.... who am I kidding, probably use a VPN too?

there are no zero day vulnerabilities and what is encryption?
