Actually the US hasn't been near Israel since Reagan. The didn't like it when they asked the US to keep the peace and we did just that. When the Israelis tried to move a tank column to where they could begin an assault a US captain jumped on the lead tank and shoved his sidearm into the tank commander's face. Ever since then we've leaned on their neighbors, well away from their borders.
