I wonder what the neighborhood demographics will be where these stores are deployed...

They tried a scan-it-yourself store where you scanned stuff as you dropped it into your cart, and it was deducted from your card. Losses went up quite drastically, from what I remember.

Walmart has been looking to get rid of cashiers for a long time. I remember hearing about a completely RFID'd store where you just scan your number of the beast card, fill your cart, and push it through an archway on the way out for it to tabulate and deduct the appropriate funds from your government-approved account.

I'd say that Walmart could end up losing a generation and a half of customers from this, but oh yeah... looks like they're going to go and make it illegal to shop anywhere else again for "just 14 days, and it's voluntary".
