Wal-Mart has been trying for this for a long long time. They were frontrunners in RFID inventory management, and I believe they floated the "everything is tagged and you're charged as you walk out the door" idea of shopping.
Minimum wage pressures didn't cause this, Wal-Mart's desire to remove any extra costs from the system, aka People, drives it.
