This was real, and was easy to duplicate in lab conditions. Cl free radicals at -45 degrees break down ozone. Stop putting them up there and the suns UV rays create ozone to fill in the hole. Easy fix for a simple problem that was first spotted in a lab. But hell, the scientist went fucking nuts and declared the end of the world, when it was just a scratch on the atmosphere's skin.
