Sometimes a situation happens in the air, they dump fuel when they know a rough landing is coming & it prevents the aircraft turning into a fireball when it hits hard on the ground.

The fuel usually is dumped high enough to atomize. It normally doesn't hit the ground. I wonder if this is just attention whoring.
