In the early days of the internet, real media created some film contests and supplied cameras and video editing software to one or several film schools. They then invited people to watch the films for free and vote on the best. Most were about 20 minutes long. However, I'd say a solid 25% were quite entertaining. This is with no budget, limited cast, and basically no experience. It really opened my eyes to how bad film was even 20+ years ago and it's become so much worse now. I wish I could still find the stuff to give some examples.

My high school got its first clunky video camera about 1975. B/W of course.
